School-zone speed camera citations
When camera images result in a ticket
- When exceeding speeds of 10+ mph over the posted school-zone limit. (statute §318.183 Unlawful Speed School Zone – Camera.)
- Enforced during the school day, including 30 minutes before classes begin and 30 minutes after dismissal.
New camera activations must begin with a 30-day warning period where only warnings are issued.
Fine & deadlines
- Registered owner of the vehicle receives a Notice of Violation (NOV) in the mail. Fine: $100
- Options – 1. Pay the fine by the due date with no points accessed, matter closed. 2. Request a hearing by the due date and dispute the ticket. 3. Ignore the NOV beyond the due date and the matter will escalate to Uniform Traffic Citation (UTC). The fine will more than double and the matter will be reported to the state where you can be denied registration renewal and the matter sent to collections. 4. Hire an attorney to represent you in court to avoid the frustration of appearing yourself. Our service will connect you with a local, qualified attorney so you can fight the ticket directly from from your phone, tablet, or computer!
Note: These are civil penalties. They do not add points to your license and are generally not reportable to insurers when resolved at the NOV stage.
Florida Statute §316.1895 (automated speed enforcement in school zones) & Florida Statute §316.0776 (speed detection systems; 30-day public awareness rule)

What happens if I do nothing?
- Ignoring the NOV beyond the deadline will result in a Uniform Traffic Citation being issued. The fine increases (commonly between $200–$300) and court costs may apply.
- Ignoring a UTC can also lead to license/registration holds and collections until satisfied.

That is fine. You are under no obligations. However, keep in mind that you still have just 30 days from the ticket issue date to pay the original fine or it will automatically escalate to a UTC (Uniform Traffic Citation). This will increase the fine by 2 or 3 times the original amount and points can be assessed on the license of the registered owner of the vehicle, even if they were not driving at the time of the infraction.
Not for paying at the NOV stage; points are not assessed for camera NOVs by statute. Insurance impact is typically avoided when resolved as an NOV.
Yes. Use the affidavit option described on your NOV (e.g., someone else was driving; vehicle sold/leased; or stolen/unauthorized use).
Follow the NOV’s instructions. In Miami-Dade, the RedSpeed page notes you can request a hearing within 30 days of issuance. The state statute allows a hearing request within 60 days of the NOV—always follow the deadline printed on your notice.
